About this trip

Hogenakkal, meaning 'smoky rocks' in Kannada, is one of India's most spectacular waterfall systems, earning it the moniker 'Niagara of India'. Located 130 km from Bangalore in Tamil Nadu's Dharmapuri district, the Cauvery River crashes over ancient carbonatite rocks — some of the oldest in the world — in a series of roaring cascades and curtain-like falls. The highlight is the traditional bamboo coracle ride that takes you right into the mist and spray of the falls, an experience that is equal parts thrilling and meditative. Beyond the falls, visit the Crocodile Park to see mugger crocodiles in semi-natural habitats and the Fishing Aquarium showcasing freshwater species of the Cauvery basin. The riverside is famous for freshly oil-fried fish prepared by local vendors — a Hogenakkal tradition you must not miss.
