Conquer the ox-shoulder peak at 4,625 ft — a dramatic rocky summit in Chikkamagaluru's Western Ghats with 360° panoramic views, waterfalls and temple sightseeing.
Makalidurga offers one of the most unique trekking experiences near Bangalore — the trail begins by walking along an abandoned railway track that once connected small towns in the region, before ascending through rocky terrain to a hilltop fortress at 4,430 ft. Located just 60 km from Bangalore in Doddaballapura, this 8 km trek combines the romance of forgotten rail routes with the thrill of summit views. The ancient fort at the summit, though in ruins, stands as a testament to the region's martial past, with crumbling walls and watchtowers offering 360-degree views of the surrounding hills, lakes and farmland. The trek is moderately challenging with some steep rocky sections near the summit, making it perfect for trekkers who want something beyond the ordinary.
